FOIL
GALLERY is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of
Rinko Kawauchi "Semear", starting from 24
April through 25 May 2008.
On the 28th April 2008, we will mark a 100 year anniversary
of the day the first ship took Japanese immigrants on
boad and set sailed from Kobe, headed for Brazil. To
accompany this centennial, Kawauchi visited Brazil three
times and had photographed the country over two years.
The title "Semear" is a Portugues word stands
for "sowing seeds". in this series, Japanese
Immigrants in Brazil, who have lived though cruel reality
awaited in their settlement, are exquisitely portrayed.
At the same time, not only the Japanese society, but
also the immense power of Brazil, from a tiny creature
on the indisputably huge and magnificent nature of the
country, to the lively Rio de Janeiro's Carnival come
together to vividly express Brazil'd cultural diversity.
Releasing overwhelming energy the country of Brazil
has, this exhibition "Semear" will present
every moments of Brazil, delicately captured by Rinko
Kawauchi.
